The four possible main heirs were all busy improving their chances. Miranda, who loved the garden, and really hated the thought of losing it to some of her siblings, still kept up with her gardening.
She was up early in the morning, working a little before school. And tending the strawberry plants first, of course!
- Ouch girl, did you just wake up, or did you not hit your bed yet?
Edith hardly reacted, so he sat down to wake her up.
- Oh, I didn't use my bed yet, I just returned from Club Captain Blue. Mom is putting us under such a pressure these days!
- Mom told you to spend all night at the club, rather than get some sleep? Chad asked.
- Nah, but I will need to find a new boyfriend who doesn't live far away.
- Why?
- No idea! She talks about some rules, but she won't tell us yet. She will probably only tell the chosen heir. Isn't that unfair?
Chad had no answer. He never heard of those rules. He ought to discuss this with Ochana!
Also Paula felt a little rushed. Both her sisters, Edith and Miranda, were older, so would Paula and her twin brother Pivian have a chance at all? She worked after school, and also exercised quite often. Would she need to have a boyfriend, too?
Pivian didn't care much about girls yet, but he understood that skills would help. And helping in the house would probably help, too? Or would it? He was just as confused as his sisters.
A week later Edith was in the kitchen trying to serve them all some food. Ochana walked in.
- Oh, is that a fire? Ochana asked.
- No mom, just my scrambled eggs... argh!
- Oh, good! Then I won't need to cook today! Thank you, Edith!
- Before you even tasted my food? Edith asked, getting kinda nervous. What if her food was horrible, would she then spoil her chances of being the chosen one?
Then Paula entered the kitchen, heading for the fridge.
- Nah, Paula! Can't you see that I'm preparing us some tasty scrambled eggs? You like eggs, don't you?
Well, A little later Paula was still waiting for those eggs to be served, and Miranda had grabbed some yoghurt instead.
- What's on your mind? Miranda asked.
- Well, just thinking... where will I live when you or Edith gets the house?
- Oh, yeah, I would have worried, too, if I wasn't the oldest, Miranda said. - I'm still in with a chance. My birthday coming up next week, you know...
Paula had to talk about this with her mom. She found Ochana in the dining room, looking rather tired.
- Mom, I need to ask, can I still become the main heir thing, even if Edith and Miranda grows up next week?
- Of course you can, Paula!
- But they seem to work so hard on it, don't they?
- Well, they don't know those rules yet. So how could they make sure to do the right things?, Ochana asked.
- Great! That's exactly what I wanted to hear! I'll show them who's gonna be that heir!
Ochana felt that everything was about to get out of control. The kids were fighting over the main heir title. That was never Ochana's intention. This shouldn't be a contest!
Few nights later, Jamiels Grossing, son of Kevin and Camilla next door, was over to discuss the local football league. Pivian, wearing a tie, hardly could get in a word when Chad and Jamiels got started.
- We will win the cup this year, Chad stated, tasting his spaghetti.
- We so won't, Jamiels replied. - The champs moved away or retired, and the younger players can't keep up with the Oasis Bulls.
- Hmph, said Pivian.
- Why don't you stop by at the gym some day, Chad suggested. - There you can meet a few of the players, both old champs and newcomers.
Pivian found that a bit strange. Why did dad never encourage him, Pivian, to attend the gym where he worked as a personal trainer? Chad was a gym addict, and Pivian knew that Paula was dad's favorite because she often worked out. But would dad affect the ongoing main heir contest?
At the same time, Paula, Ochana and Edith were eating in the kitche.
- Is the food okay, mom? Edith asked. - I broke a nail when cutting the onion. I'll wear gloves when performing tonight.
- Sure, Edith. Food was fine! sorry about your nail!
The next evening, Pivian lured upstairs to check out the bedrooms once more. The second floor is ot in use by anyone, except the workout machine is there in the hall way. He was surprised to find Edith up there.
- What are you doing here? Pivian asked.
- Same as you, I assume?
- Checking out the rooms... why?
- Don't pretend you don't know, Pivian! Edith said. - This weekend I'll become a young adult, at the picnic, you know! I will probably get this house, and I will get married. My new family will definitely make use of the entire house, I'm just planning a little. This will be the main bedroom.
- Oh, I should not be up here then, disturbing your hard planning, Pivian said and walked downstairs silently.
But one floor higher up, in the attic, Ochana was entering the secret door. She had to check the Secret Mission's Rules and Directions again.
She had not paid enough attention to those rules, how to pich the heir, and what the heir and second heir would need to know.
She read it all gain. She should reward certain skills and interest with points. Then adding 5 points reflecting her own wish, summing it all up, and finally one of the four would stand out as the heir! She assumed that the runner up would become the second heir.
There were rules about who they could marry and where they could live, but Ochana realized that she would first need to choose the two heirs, then inform them. They would probably not refuse anything once they were chosen.
The oldest twins' birthday was coming up in two days. According to the rules, Ochana would need to announce the result during the birthday. she felt nervous. she would also need to complete her volume of the Gloomville Diaries. She looked up at the shelf, and decided that it was time to drink to Inspiration.
She was thoughtful tonight. Her mission was about to come to an end. She had summed up the points for Edith, Miranda, Pivian and Paula. She knew who was leading, and who would never stand a chance.
The only bit that remained, was to decide who should have her 5 points, she couldn't decide. The only thing she knew for sure was that none of them would have all 5 of them.
Next update will be up July 3!
