My 20 Years Anniversary

I just realized it's been 20 - TWENTY! - years since my first The Sims web site was released in February 2002*! So to celebrate this amazing anniversary I invite you to dive into the past to explore bits of this journey.

My first site was for The Sims 1, and already back then I had a community focus with a council, experts on food and babies and much more. It was perhaps the first sims site out there that was "for sims, by sims". SUN, anyone? The site had guest writers from other games, and it turned out as a nice role playing universe.

The Butler Academy

Because several houses in my Region 12 (and beyond) have live-in servants, it's time to focus a bit on their traditional education. The classic courses were designed by the National Butler Academy, and is currently offered by the Butler Academy in San Myshuno, as well as Windenburg Business School in Windenburg *.

Serving a high nobility house is actually a highly rated profession (especially by the families who had this kind of work for generations). Teens can switch to a private high school at the age of 22. The Butler Academy has status as a High School and offers several Servant studies associated with an upper class finer house; Butler, Cook, Governess, Maid and Gardener (industrial farmers/gardeners will rather study at Landgraab Science Institute). Students will choose classes like «How to Serve and be Served», Handiness, Cooking, Gardening, Gourmet cooking, Parenting. There will be additional lighter classes as Mixology, Baking and Piano as well. Students must reach minimum 2-5 skill points in their chosen classes to get their diploma. Houses that hire might have additional skill requirements.

Updated Heading

Not really worth a blog post, but as Google/Blogger has some problems uploading a header without a blurry result, I had to post the image on the blog. It did not help a bit, so forgive me for leaving the blurry header as is, and I'll give it another try eventually.

It was on time the header got an update as it still thought it was 2014 with all TS3 graphics. You might recognize a few of the new faces, and you might even smile when you notice who is smelling the fart from that cow. The cow will be there for the Cottage Living release only, so the farting will not go on forever...

Your Noble Life - 4 - Elders to Afterlife

I've made my own set of rules to guide my nobility through life. Most rules regard heritage, economics and administration, although nobility naturally takes easier on this than real royals. Most of this can be used regardless of series (TS4, TS3, TS2). Here is the last of four guides based on a noble person's life stage.

Life goes on even if you decide to step back as an elder. Finally time to spend more time with your chosen one?

Not too serious, but not without a touch of importance either...

Your Noble Life - 3 - Young Adult to Adult

I've made my own set of rules to guide my nobility through life. Most rules regard heritage, economics and administration. Although nobility can take easier on this than real royals, there are certain obligations. Most of this can be used regardless of series (TS4, TS3, TS2). Here is the first of four guides based on a noble person's life stage - young adult to adult.

Jarret Ross and Ribra Lynn T. Ross, Duke and Duchess of Rossie.

Not too serious, but not without purpose and importance...

Your Noble Life - 2 - Teenagers

I've made my own set of rules to guide my nobility through life. Most rules regard houses, peerages, heritage, economics and administration, although nobility naturally takes easier on this than the real royals would. Most of this can be used regardless of series (TS4, TS3, TS2). Here is the second of four guides based on a noble person's life stage - teenager.

Students at Chateau Cavalier have their private class room for homework and studies.

Not too serious, but not completely without purpose, either...

Your Noble Life - 1 - Baby to Child

I've made my own set of rules to guide my nobility through life. Most rules regard heritage, economics and administration, although nobility naturally takes easier on this than real royals do. Most of this can be used regardless of series (TS4, TS3, TS2). Here is the first of four guides based on a noble person's life stage.

In your first year you will be more interested in that bottle of milk than your rank in the line of successors.

Not too serious, but not totally useless , either...

Nobility: Rank and Titles

(Year 225) It's been a while since I introduced nobility to my Region 12. Historically, the first peers have been around since Year 2, and I know the detailed story of each house.

Nobility from several districts gathered at the wedding of Auphor Saxor, Baron of Verde. Left to right: Elvy (Rab-Saxor) Ross, Baroness of Shiningham. Bennet Ross, Baron of Shiningham. Ribra Lynn (Thebe) Ross, Duchess of Rossie. Jarret Ross, Duke of Rossie. Gloria (Roxenfox) Saxor, Duchess of Meadows. Victus Am. Saxor, Duke of Meadows. (Groom) Auphor Saxor, Baron of Verde. (Bride) Morgan (Fyres) Saxor, Baroness of Verde. Dominic Fyres, Lord von Dresden, of Deadgrass and von Haunt. Moira (Rattle) Fyres, Mrs Dominic Dresden. Miss Siobhan Fyres.

In this post I want to focus a bit more on how my nobility ranks, and their titles. There are four levels, royalty (they reside far away and I don't play them), high nobility, low nobility and noble titles (which often counts as low nobility). I did some RL research over the past year, and I was amazed by the complexity! I had to make my own routines, but there are still certain elements based n RL nobility.

My Stock Market

Did I ever write about my stock market?

Just a Region 12 overview, as I had no picture of the stocks ;)
In my TS2 game I had a living stock market and now I have this in TS4, too! I keep track on owners, results and a possible dividend. Back in TS2 the results were based on how successful the stores were run, but now I just use a dice to decide development. When a shareowner dies, heirs get a small or big part of those shares. Change in owner structure might cause sudden challenges or conflicts between family branches, actually beyond my planning.

Fame as a Tool

In my Region 12 there are numerous famous persons, but not all are Actors or Artists. Also Politicians, Priests and Nobility get some fame stars, as I use the fame system as a tool affecting much more than performing arts.

Baron Charlopold Demitris de Cavalier (32) has 2 fame stars thanks to his title. In a couple years he will become Duke,
which involves a 3rd star. His fame will not fade as long as he resides Chateau Cavalier.

Read on to see my guidelines.

New year and more projects

Happy new year! I've started 2020 with diving into my game's old history! I love story telling and history, and whenever I create something in my game I also like to know its origin. I want all my sims to have a background spanning many generations, even if those were never played out.

The past week I really dived deep, exploring the past of my Region 12. My year count is currently at Year 222, so I went right back to Year 0 - I imagine this was when the community transferred from TS1 to TS2 and time was no longer static. They started a new and needed to define a top level of society, to control community but also handle politics and wars. There was established an organization called the Royal Chamber, with the power to approve the best man for each peerage. Many families claimed a noble background from TS1, but brought no proofs. Hardly anything could be verified.

The Royal Chamber introduced the King of SimNation, Baltazar II of the De Froux family. This family had a Coat of arms already that could actually be verified, and left no doubt about high nobility (pictured). But for the rest?

My Stock Market

Well, I don't really have a stock market to share, like I did for The Sims 2, but I do have many stock companies in my game, and I keep track on all details regarding ownership and their annual yield. So, I decided to share some of this...

I keep track on everything in a spreadsheet. Numbers are percent ownership that year. Grey/blue background is Top 3.

Residents of my Region 12 can establish a personal holding company, which I tend to do for showbiz people and those focusing a bit on investments, but in general the complexity of larger stock companies is more fun! I have a rule that when a company is worth more than §1.000.000 or has more than 5 owners, a set of rules must be followed.

Elections - Rules & schedule

In my Region 12 there is an election taking place on 1st day of Spring every 5th year. The election decides who the 5 councilors will be for the coming 5 years.

This is where the 5 Councilors work minimum 2 days every week.

Feel free to copy some of this if you want to try something similar. Also find several articles on the
Year 220 election on this blog and on my Youtube channel - tagged "How I Play".

The election runs like this:

Give your Sims a custom Lottery

With Seasons EP there was introduced a world wide lottery, where your sims can participate to win great prizes. I've played 4 full years now, and never seen the lottery, and I know other simmers have not got this random calendar event, either.

So, if you want an alternative way to run your own lottery, read on!

Back in the days of The Sims 2, I ran the busy Simmerville Hood website. The site was packed with ideas for your sim community, including organizations and a few tools to add fun activities and calculations. One tool was the Lottery presented by the Grey Sims Organization. It's basically a small JavaScript making it easy to run your own local lottery. Your browser must allow JavaScript and popup windows, I think most browsers do these days.

Go to this page and enter details like lottery title, how many prizes, what each prize is, and then how many lots were sold. Then you will need to add names on those participating, or just a lot ID if you rather like to refer to some other listing you already have. Finally you will get a notice with a random winner of each of your prizes.

Do a test run with just a handful lots to learn how it works.

Sims must be charged manually, and prizes must be arranged manually as well. Using the "money" cheat will fix both. Prizes can of course be anything that you find a way to add to the winning household, money or a TV or a dinner for four sims at a nice restaurant? Think of something that might add to a story or the way you prefer to play. If giving each resident one lot each, you don't really need to charge them because they will all get the same. It's all up to you :)

Detesters Revival - Completed!

Finally, TS3 testsims Pauline and Hector Detester's humorous story is now complete with all pictures revived! They were gone thanks to photo server service no longer accepting 3rd party posting. So, I uploaded all photos to this blog instead, crossing fingers for not getting a "sorry, server full" note.

My test sims Pauline and Hector Detester's story is now fully accessible!

I must admit that I enjoyed rereading the Detester story. This couple is probably among my better characters for a story, if you missed them in the past, I hope you will give them a chance and read from their first chapter. There is a developing story, but I think reading just random chapters might be fun, too :)

On a side note, while fixing the blog posts photos, I found that two chapters were never published! Meaning that even if you already read this blog story, there will be new stuff for you! Those two chapters will be posted during December, I'll post a notice when it's done.

Also note that I added chapter numbers and seasons to the posts. All chapters are linked from the Detesters story's main page.

Also Seagull Cottage and Town of Galucca were affected by the picture drop out, and will get their own revival during this Winter.

Detesters revival

Long time followers might recall my TS3 story about the "lovely" Pauline and her hubby Hector. They worked as testsims, had twin daughters and moved to town of Galucca. This series is not closed, but something beyond my control happened, forcing it all to be paused.

Pauline and Hector Detester are back!

All pictures were hosted by Photobucket, and I should have known - at one point all those free services will lock your content, and the only way you can regain access is to upgrade your account which normally means paying a never ending annual fee. I refused to pay them, so all my stories using pictures from them were ruined. When pictures can no longer be watched, a photo driven story becomes rather wasted, right?

This took place couple years ago, and I've finally started the work updating the Detesters story. I still kept all pictures safe, it just takes some time to fix it all. At the moment the first ten chapters were revived, and the rest will be fixed during November.

Also Seagull Cottage and Town of Galucca were affected by this (perhaps a few more, too), and will get its revival over the coming months.

You'll find the first Detesters chapter right here!

The Ugly Wickerwood - Chapter 23 (season 1 closing)

Welcome back to the world of the Ugly Wickerwood! This chapter will end the first season, so a little drama was in place!

Albert Wickerwood, the guy who was raised to believe that ugly is better than nice, resides in his house with wife Myrhna and their two ugly kids Hui and Edna. No wait, Myrhna's elderly mom Anna Eastwood also lives there together with her fresh husband, Jonas. In fact, Jonas is convinced that the house belongs to Anna and not to Albert.

The elderly couple took over the master bedroom downstairs, and Albert and Myrhna were forced to move upstairs. Jonas thinks of them as renters, but they don't really mind a lot. It shouldn't make much of a difference, should it?

The Ugly Wickerwood - Chapter 22

Myrhna's mother, Anna Eastwall, surprised them all by marrying her friend, Jonas. The newly wed elderly couple resides the master bedroom, and over the past years Anna acted as if she owned Albert's house.

- It certainly feels like ugly business, Albert said. He and Myrhna was sitting in the livingroom to talk. Kids were in bed, and Anna and Jonas were in their room.
- She doesn't mean to be ugly, Myrhna said.
- Argh, of course not, I am the ugly one, Albert shrugged. - And you know, our kids are perfectly ugly, too!

How I build a Sim's personallity

While waiting for this season's last Wickerwood chapter (it's in the works, but needs a few days more), I want to tell you how I deal with my sims' personality. Not saying this is a needed way, or even a good way, but at least it helps me keeping a focus for sims that figures in my stories.

Their personality is mainly set by the game, but I like to add to that. This helps me knowing how they will live, what their preferences are, how they react and some times how they communicate etc. Life want and traits make the foundation, but I often add my string of "additional DNA" as well as preferred styles. To keep all these details easily accessable, even if game is not running while I write my stories, I often make a personality card for the main characters. In the past I kept notes in a spread sheet, but I figured that creating a card gives me much more inspiration and ideas, it feels like I geet closer to the sim's true personality :)

This card shows Cathrina H. Wooblershield, you might recognize her from "Seagull Cottage Bed & Breakfast" - a story that takes place in my town of Galucca, and that had a long break but will return to this blog this Fall. Her card gives all essentials regarding her person, including pictures of her as well as the house she resides - Seagull Cottage.

Name is given, not much to add there, except that I always add the maiden name initial when a sim marries and takes anorther sim's lastname. Cathrina's maaiden name is Horgan. She is married to Alexander Wooblershield.

On top you see that her lifetime want is Heartbreaker. This I think of as a long term goal, not something that necessarily affects her everyday choices. She has 5 traits, and I choose to focus on 3 of them as main traits and the last 2 as additional flairs. Her main traits are Friendly, Slob and Ambitious. The weaker traits are Computer Whiz and Flirty, which might affect how those first 3 come into play. So what can we get out of that combo? She obviously is a social sim, network builder and often in a flirting way without necessarily wanting to cheat on her spouse. Being a slob might not only mean that she hates cleaning, but maybe her social relations becomes a mess, to? A few misunderstandings, a few conflicts - all caused by her not keeping her relsations clean and spotless? The Computer Whiz addiitional flair might mean that she tend to think technically abut others, forgetting that they have feelings and questions. She sure is an interesting character for running her late Great Aunt Gloria Moonster's old bed & breakfast, and we know she already did quite a few attempts to bringing the weird neighbors back to the open hood nights at the cottage.

There is also a number top right, number 4. It gives Cathrina's "success status" on a scale from 1 to 6. A 4 is pretty decent, she will probably just about succeed with her business, but not without working real hard. In all my games this factor is present, in some towns there is even regions where the most successful resides (5-6), and poor quarters where less fortunate families live (1-2). A child from a 6 family would never marry someone from a family with success factor 1 or 2. If a 4-sim marries a 5-sim, the household will count as a 4.5 household (the average). The couple's kids will normally inhherit 4.5 but a DNA factor might either rase it to 5.5 or lower iit to 3.5. This way kids will succeed differently, and some parents find it easier to pick the main heir. I often play my towns through generations, so this affects the long term developments of a community.

Cathrina being a Virgo means she will be interested in details, she might like science and she is not afraid to work hard to reach her goals.

The DNA string "Gg-hH-ff-bB-MF-Ii-Ss" is not existing in the game, but I invented it in order to deside a sim's looks and behavior. It might look complicated, but is easy to use once you get to it. I've also used this in my TS4 game.

Each set contain one from dad and one from mom. I use a dice to pass on the DNA, normally once a child is born.
"Gg" = average, no effect. "GG" would mean need of glasses. "gg" would mean no need of glasses.
"hH" = average, no effect. "HH" would mean lots of hair. "hh" would mean little hair. "HH"-men will have body hair, while "hh"-men will never have body hair. Cathrina will not have a very long or volumous hairstyle, neither will she have a very flat/short style.
"ff" = no freckles. "FF" would mean lots of freckles. The average "Ff" or "fF" would normally give no freckles, or just a few.
"bB" = average, no effect. "BB" would mean beautyspot. "bb" would mean no beautyspot.
"MF" = masculine/feminine. This gets more complex, but basicaly one f each will be neutral, while any form of "Ff", "fF", "ff" or "FF" will tend to more feminine. Bigger letters gives a bolder effect. In my games "MM"-women and "FF"-men are gay, but some might still live a normal family life. Masculine women will rarely were skirts/dresses, and feminine men might more often wear red/orange/pink/pastels.
"Ii" = neutral, no effect. "II would mean bright intellect (smart), while "ii" would mean dumb - but not necessarily unhappy. Cathrina is neutral, knowledge might not come easy, but she won't make many mistakes either.
"Ss" = neutral, no effect. "SS" would mean successful regarding social status, and 1 is added to the sim's success factor. "ss" would mean less successful and success factor is reduced by 1.

From the DNA I will know that Cathrina has no need for glasses before she turns elderly, she has average hair growth, no talent for freckles, no beautyspot (but can still pass on the "B" to her children). She is masculine/feminine balanced, but with both big letters, she might be very masculine and very feminine as required - like not being afraid of doing heavy body work, and enjoying to dress up very feminine with no need of doing so every single day. I also know that Cathrina's intellect is average, and her social success is average, too.

With a little experience, I can quickly see my sims' qualities from looking at their personality card. A tad complicated, but do feel free to adapt any ideas if you like.
