One night Hope finds Animere alone outside the fence. She looks depressed, and Hope guesses it's because of her upcoming birthday. Animere is about to become a young adult!
Hope always had a weak spot for Animere, she is the only one with no scales on her legs, not really looking to live like a mermaid at all. She doesn't even eat Kelp. Hope tells her that she wants Animere to take her late father's lastname, Klinge. Animere is successful enough to claim her future husband to take her name. Only if she marries a wealthy merman with one of the most important rings, there might be trouble concerning the name.
But the name isn't really enough to put a smile on Animere's face. She has got so much on her mind. she looks at her brother Davitor's new home, out there south of Hope Terra. Davitor built a house for his new family on some smaller rocks, but where will Animere build? If her future husband insists on living like a merman - Animere won't be able to follow him, because she can hardly swim!
Hope assures her that they will get the opportunity to build on the western rocks. But first Animere needs to find a man!
And Animere grows into a beautiful young woman. Her aspiration is to master mixology. What a weird life wish when living on some rocks in the middle of open waters!
Animere and her younger sister Shimmerita often discuss their future. Their older brother Aquid and his wife Clammensa are expecting their first child, and this house will be full of kids in no time! Animere admits that the swimming worries her the most. And the sharks! There are plenty of sharks out there, they never do any harm to the Mer people, but the sharks can hardly tell that Animere is of the Mer people! And what about Animere's descendants, will they all be eaten by sharks?
They all need to swim frequently to keep their scales healthy and shiny. All except Animere, of course.
Clammensa has learned to talk the human language by now, and Hope warns her that she will probably forget to talk the language of the Mer people, like Hope forgot it. Also, Clammensa might be able to visit her folks only a few times while still being able to communicate with them.
Hope asks if Clammena knows anything about life at Mersea Portal South, where Hope grew up so long ago. She tells about her halfsister who just disappeared. Clammensa laughs. Disappeard? Everyone down there knows that one of the Merez daughters married into the Mudder group, the enemy of the Mersea group!
Few weeks later, Animere decides to visit her brother Davitor. He painted lots of stuff all through his teenage years, and Hope asked Animere to bring couple paintings out there to the southern rocks.
Animere likes to row their little boat, although she would probably die if she as much as saw a shark fin or the Kraken!
It's not very far though. She notices a dark haired person out there, it must be one of the Mer people. There are still a few of them, although they hardly can reproduce because of the poison that is still spreading on seaground level. Animere notices that her brother's boat is not there, are they out?
Davitor's lovely wife, Ocira Tushell, opens the door. She is alone at home, but she is not telling where Davitor is. Ocira serves Kelp and some other green stuff. Ocira tells tht Davitor wants to paint Aquid and Clammensa, like he wants to paint all married couples.
Animere tells Ocira that she has trouble finding a husband, because she can't just swim down there to pick one. Ocira might be able to help. She can still talk the Mer language, but has heard that it will only be temporary. Instead of Kelp, she serves some smashed yellow sea grass mixed with dried fish fins. And Animere goes yuck!
Davitor did't get back home the next couple hours, and Animere leaves.
She doesn't notice the black haired merman that is waiting for her. It's Abrovin Scalor, brother of Clammensa.
Suddenly he makes an energic move, his purple tail hits the boat, and Animere falls into the deep water! Abrovin grabs her, and pulls her underwater! He wants to play, maybe this pretty girl wants to visit his folks down there? Oh no, she can't breath, stop it!
Back at Hope Terra Aquid is very nervous. Clammensa is about to give birth!
It's a baby boy, and they name him Almus Merez. He's got Clammensa's skin. Why is Aquid staring at his newborn son like that? Didn't the baby get scales on his tiny legs?
