(Year 227, Cottage Living) I like my farmers to have different goals for their efforts and produce. Although most of them grow a little bit of everything for own consume, they often have a bigger amount of one or two selected species. This might be according to their Farm Rights, which force them to deliver a certain amount, or they might have specialized in specific products or markets, such as preserves or animal treats etc.
Does your farm have such a main goal?
* It can be a farm dedicated to a certain produce, such as potatoe farm, onion farm, fruit farm, etc.
* A farm can produce ingredients for what it actually produces. At my Watson Chicken Farm they obviously keep chicken, but they are more known for their Mayonnaise, than their eggs. This preserve is made of eggs, and it gives better income to sell Mayonnaise than plain eggs. They sell to the produce stall in the village, but the Mayonnaise is popular way outside Henford-on-Bagley, and is currently sold also from shopping malls and suitable stores and markets in numerous of my worlds (retail stores, requires Get To Work EP).
* Focusing on wool production might include a goal of producing all possible colors of the llama wool. If so, your farm will not only keep llamas, but also grow ingredients for the various animal treats, such as strawberries, blueberries, aubergine and lettuce. There are probably too many hard-to-find ingredients involved, so your farmer might like to choose 2 or 3 wool colors and plan from there.
* A farm's signature product can be preserves, but also animal treats, colored eggs, cultivated milk or wool, can be the perfect final product to base the main income on. It might also be more of a challenge, and make the farming routines a tad more interesting in the long run. Because there might be many factors affecting the value, you will need to experiment a little to find what should be the traditional produce/product of your farm.
* Your farm can also use the crops for cooking or baking, selling the dishes instead of the ingredients might be a fun twist on farming, perhaps as an additional activity. You can use the street sales table to sell dishes (might require certain packs, but I think one table is available with the base game).
* All kind of farming will benefit from fishing. It can be used for general crops fertinlizer, but also to make the Fishy Protein Treat that will increase any animal's produce. Having a pond at the farm is not a bad idea, but a successful fishing spot nearby will work, also. The most important is to assign the fishing job to a household member, as it might be too time consuming for the main farmer. Children can help with this, and I think they will build their mental skill while fishing. Pay notice to their trats, though.
* You should also give produce quality a thought. Most produce sell for more when top quality, but if you use it for ingredients, say cooking or animal treats, the quality is not always that important. So, it's a good thing knowing which part of the farm's produce should get more attention regarding fertilizing and evolving plants etc.
New Food & Recipes section coming
Next month you will find lots of new info on produce, food recipes and animal treats here in the community section. This is still in the works, and is meant to release on or about September 15th. It will help you to see how you can make use of certain ingredients, again giving a hint of what is better to grow unless you only grow to sell directly. My idea is that each farm should have a few recipes that are traditional for that farm, with ingredients based on their signature produce.
Farming becomes even more fun with a little bit of planning and traditions :)
