Closing down the Regional Councils?

(Year 230, Fall) These days a political reform is debated in the People Chamber of Mazaloom, and although there are still about 4 years until the next election, a reform will need to be voted on no later than during Year 232. There are several aspects coming into play, and one of them might be closing down the 8 regional Councils.

The 21 members of the People Chamber. Seated left: Vice President Fanny Silverbone, LEFT party (Leading Trades & Taxes dept.). Seated right: President Rob Wilder, RIGHT party (Leading Law & Justice dept.).

- Our Politicians burn themselves out, says President Wilder. - Basically you get elected a Councilor representing your district, which makes you a member of the Council of your region. But many Councilors will also get a seat at the People Chamber, with an extra office in San Myshuno. The consequence is that you can't give 100% in the regional Council, and you can't give 100% in People Chamber. Especially if you have a family, it is practically impossible serving all these arenas at the same time.

And Vice President Silverbone agrees.
- The system is a bit double up, really. In many cases the regional Council assists the People Chamber, but we tend to forget that People Chamber wants a win for all the regions, anyway. All 8 regions are represented there according to population. Besides, in most local cases the district do not depend on approval from neither the regional Council nor the People Chamber to make minor changes. The region Council is caught in between, and I think their responsibility is already taken well care of by the People Chamber.

While everyone seems to agree there must be a regional Mayor, there is now a suggestion that the Mayor can use their office at People Chamber, and won't need a full Council or a Council Hall. It was already suggested that the existing Council Halls can serve as regional administrative and recreation centers, instead. This will be seen in accordance with the upcoming reform, which also will debate a new regional structure with more power to a population heavy districts like San Myshuno, and where even Church of Similius' traditional two reserved seats might be reduces to one seat, only.

The reform will be on the agenda this Fall, but there will be no voting until Year 232. Details not affecting the election directly might become effective later this year (Year 230).
